Designing with heart,
crafting with purpose
About
Anu Tandon Vieira is an Indian creative with over three decades of experience across textile and product design, interiors, conservation, and design pedagogy. A graduate in sculpture from the Delhi College of Art, she holds a Post Graduate degree in textiles from National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. Tandon Vieira is passionate about design that prioritises sustainability, comfort, and craftsmanship.
The Retyrement Plan (Mumbai, India) from Tandon Vieira is a range of occasional furniture pieces that re-purposes material waste from urban jungles to create furniture that is both sustainable and beautiful. In partnership with Indian craftsmen, The Retyrement Planing turns discarded tyres of all shapes and sizes, along with cane, bamboo and ropes made of tailoring and plastic waste into pieces that are designed with our collective future in mind.
At The Retyrement Plan, the people behind the scene are central to the way the brand is conceptualized and built. Forced migration to urban centres is a major concern in the Indian metropolis. Left without sustainable livelihoods, skilled workers are compelled to uproot their lives and adopt unskilled professions in cities. The loss here is a deeply personal one but also, on a broader scale, a loss of talented craftsmen and the generations of knowledge that they have acquired and now carry.
The Retyrement plan believes that products are only as good as the practices they support. Providing reliable, well paid employment and fair treatment to our craftsmen is foremost among our priorities. Our ethics define us and our products carry forth that legacy, at every step of the design process.
